installing power windows and door locks

Possibly the most sought after convenience items are remote door locks and power windows. Power windows have been around since the early 1950's, and door locks made their debut in the early 1970's.

Remote door lock kits can be purchased almost anywhere, but the windows are a different story. If you want to be correct, you'll have to find a complete (working) setup...regulators, switches, trim, and harness...at your local salvage yard. IF you're fortunate enough to find a set, expect to pay several hundred dollars for it. And good luck finding the correct door panels...at ANY price!

And should you be successful, you'll still be dealing with items that are 30+ years old, as well as the antiquated technology.

You're probably thinking that even with an after-market kit, you'll still need to cut the door panels for the switches, and will still have a hole where the window crank is.

Nope! Sonny figured out how to install the window motors, and then put the window cranks (non-functional) back on. And neither of us mounted the switches on the door panels. Both will be explained later.

The easier way is to buy a complete kit. Sonny and I found several on EBAY, and opted for the kit sold by prothe (do an ebay search), who we came to know as Pete. His price is about the best, and he responded to my tech questions quickly. Sonny bought window motors for the front windows, and five door actuators (including the tailgate) for about $150. I got two motors and two actuators for less than $125. Pete can tailor a kit specifically for your needs.

When your system arrives in that big box (Pete ships quickly), don't be intimidated. Since it's a universal kit, you won't be using all the parts. Take a moment, and spread them out on your workbench. From there, you can almost see how it will install.
